Stay With Casino Group Of Hotels

CGH Earth conceives and organizes truly remarkable travel experiences over multiple destinations in southern India. A family owned enterprise, the group began its operations in 1954 with their flagship property, the Casino Hotel, in Willingdon Island, Kochi.

The small hotel that started out to cater to port visitors in Willingdon Island, Kochi, in the 1950s has evolved into an unusual experiment in tourism. It has become widely known today for its respect for nature and local cultures around which its singular travel experiences are spun.
Over time this small seed has spawned a cluster of fine hotels in southern India that are a toast to the land and its people, as much as to the creative spirit of its visionaries. Together, they celebrate a soaring imagination and a refined aesthetic that gives all these properties their distinctive character.

Our Hotels

The Art of Nature

Thekkady – Spice Village

Spice village for us is a work of nature as much as it is a lofty expression of the imagination. We conceived the resort as a village and approached its building the way you would a village - with local materials, native artisans, mountain spirit and traditional wisdom in its creation. Though traditional in its conception, this is a ‘village’ that offers you all the comforts of a city minus the noise, pollution and other urban ills that you can do without. Our interaction with the ecology of these hills is symbiotic, influenced by the native people of these parts who have lived in harmony with their surroundings for generations. They taught us about self-sustaining systems and also steward our organic gardens that put fresh vegetables, fruits and spices on your tables every day.

The resort and the Periyar area in general, offer an amazing diversity of flora, much of it unique. You'll encounter, among many others, the Indian Pennywort, Kalachoo and Sweet Flag, all medicinal in nature, and processed into remedies at our ayurvedic facility.

From busy boatyard to boutique hotel

Fort Kochi - Brunton Boatyard

This restored period building that is our hotel sits well with its colonial era surroundings and counterparts - the great trading houses of British India when pepper from Kerala was considered as precious as gold. Like the cultures they celebrate and display, Brunton Boatyard is a five star hotel whose interiors reflect an eclectic but tasteful blend of English, Portuguese and Dutch influences as seen in its high ceilings, hanging fans and a plethora of artifacts and curios from a great mercantile age known for its pomp and glamour. The scent of colonial history is all around you as you take a tour of the historic Fort Cochin area where the hotel stands. Though little remains of the fort itself there are legacies of its proud history to be seen everywhere.

All the 22 rooms of the Brunton Boatyard overlook the sea as do all their en-suite bathrooms. There are few pleasures to rival that of watching lazy ships and fishing boats or gamboling dolphins while going about your ablutions. You will also catch some stunning sunsets over the palm fringed shores of Vypin Island close by and hear the cry of cormorants and gulls from your room, drawing you into a different world.

A Keeper of Time

Fort Kochi – Eighth Bastion

Unknown to many the Dutch East India Company, or the VOC, was one of the earliest global business undertakings. The Seven Bastions (from which we derived our unique name) referred to a type of layout peculiar to VOC Forts, a tradition they followed from Surat to the straits of Sumatra where they had their presence.

The model of the ship that you will see as you walk into our reception area is a reminder of the VOCs heyday attesting to their prominence in trade. The relic is that of the ‘Batavia’, a legendary merchantman that ended its successful career when shipwrecked off the Australian coast.

Down the road from us lies a little slice of frozen time. It is hard to imagine, as one wanders around the tranquil pathways of the old Dutch cemetery, that this region - the Malabar - was once a battleground for Europe’s prominent seafaring nations that fought over spices and trade routes for 300 years.

The Eight bastion conjures up these visions from the past, connecting many dots on the map of time for you to reflect upon and wonder at.

A King’s Abode

Ernakulam - Chittoor Kottaram

Resting on the banks of the quaint backwaters of Kerala, the heritage mansion is witness to over three centuries of history. Take a short boat-ride from mainland Kochi to arrive at a destination that has been home to ancient cultures. Soak in the understated grandeur of a structure with wooden roofs on which time slipped on, and magnificent architecture designed to transport you to a bygone era.

Way back in the eighteenth century, an enlightened monarch discovered that power is not about cavalries, splendour is not about gold, and true sovereignty is the freedom to surrender to the divine. That’s when the Rajah of Cochin built a temple for his family deity in the quiet hamlet of Chittoor. A fervent devotee, he soon realized that he could not stay away from the temple. So he built himself a manor just fifty yards away from the temple. Simple, elegant and regal, it housed an entourage that would cater to him when he visited the temple. And thus came into being Chittoor Kottaram. A king’s residence sprawling with true-blooded majesty, without all the glitz.

Today, Chittoor Kottaram stands testimony to the legacy of a long-lost kingdom. An ideal destination for couples looking for an intimate getaway. Right from the moment you arrive on a boat, you get transported to a timeless era. At the entrance, your personal entourage extends a traditional welcome. There are no other guests, the entire staff is dedicated to serve just you.

The old town of Chittoor has not changed much since those times. You can get to feel its ancient pulse as you stroll through its streets, hear the peels of its temple bells and see local people go about their daily life at the pond or the market, purposefully yet unhurriedly, just as their ancestors did.

Paying Tribute To Tradition

Vembanad lake - Spice Coast Cruise

We took these old boats, called Kettuvalloms, and went to work on them as would a craftsman. With some imaginative tweaks to these vessels, we converted them into stately floating homes to cruise the placid waters of the vast and captivating Vembanad lake. Made from natural materials, these spice boats are powered with solar energy and vegetable oils to reduce their impact upon the lake. The crew of these boats are simple fisherfolk, men who know these waters from their early years. However, they do more than just pilot these behemoths, alternating between navigating the waterways, preparing meals for the guests onboard and generally keeping things ‘shipshape’. Their smiling faces speak of a culture that is famed for its accommodating and amiable ways. This is indeed spontaneous hospitality, or what we term ‘hospitality from the heart’, a common CGH Earth feature.

The House Boat or Kettuvallam cruise commences either from the Spice Coast boat landing or Coconut Lagoon.

The cruise takes you across lake Vembanad, through narrow canals heading South passing low lying rice fields, churches, temples, schools and a complete life style in a water world. Stop to buy fish or tender coconut, enjoy delicious food of the boat men or just relax and enjoy the beauty. Lose sense of time as you drift into the sunset.Stargaze to your heart's content and fall asleep to the gentle rocking of the Kettuvallam.

We recommend a two night cruise but even a one nighter is an experience, not to be missed.

Travelling in Time

French Quarter, Pondicherry - Palais De Mahe

Palais De Mahe is situated at the intersection of two beckoning worlds. One gently murmurs the spirit of Colonial France with its clean streets, neatly plastered bungalows and flower-decked balconies while the other envelops you in its salt and spice-laden air coming off the Coromandel coast of India in great animating gusts. The street signs in Pondicherry are unique and in several languages to aid the global traveler. Its urban character is a standing tribute to diversity. Historic buildings jostle against charming sidewalk cafes, trendy designer wear boutiques stand next to native sari shops and other upmarket commercial addresses share humble space with roadside bangle sellers and temple pilgrims in a bustling bazaar-like environment. It is these rich contrasts and counterpoints that we noticed, studied and infused into the soul of Palais de Mahe, which mirrors the twin faces of this charming seaside city in southern India. The style remains faithful to a historic past, while the experience on offer is a captivating blend of the old and the new making you feel like a traveler in time.

Palais de Mahe is located in the heart of the French quarter of Pondicherry close to the Bay of Bengal. It is just footsteps away from the famed promenade - far enough to keep the noise away and near enough for you to stroll over in flip-flops and catch the breeze at any time of night or day.

Visalam

Kanadugathan, Chettinad

Visalam was the splendid house that KVAL Ramanathan Chettiar built for his eldest daughter, Visalakshi, in Chettinad more than a century ago. However, Visalam never became the lively family home it was intended to be and was used only for occasional family gatherings during the period following its construction. A half-century later it passed onto us bringing with it an unparalleled legacy and a technical challenge of the highest order. How were we to restore this masterpiece while remaining faithful to its original conception? It was a task that we met with diligence and pride, selecting both materials and people who approached Visalam’s restoration with great care and skill as you would a work of art. No sweeping changes were made to the building’s interiors except to partition its vast halls into comfortable guest rooms from which to experience a palpable presence of the past. Today at Visalam, one of our landmark heritage properties, you can bear witness to an ambiance that still exudes the spirit of the times it was built in. Its character remains unchanged over the decades and faithfully recalls its original inspiration - the touching saga of a father’s gift to his first daughter!

Aathangudy, a village situated about 10 Kms from Visalam is a place famous for its hand made tiles. There are over one hundred small-scale tile factories in this village where the entire tile making process is handmade.

The celebrated Chettinad cuisine is one of the spiciest and the most aromatic in India. The fresh ground masalas give it the distinctive integrity in taste. The cuisine that is predominantly non-vegetarian stretches out into interesting snacks and delectable vegetarian dishes too.

Chettinad is the home to the Chettiars, a prosperous mercantile community. Apart from many other things this place is well known for its fiery cuisine and architecture. Most of the palatial 18th-century mansions that one will get to see here were built using materials imported from East Asian countries and Europe about 100 years ago.

Capturing the Spirit of the Times

Tamil Quarter, Pondicherry - Maison Perumal

Maison Perumal is a 130 year old family mansion dating back to French colonial times in Pondicherry. It was built by a member of one of the prosperous Tamil communities settled around the temple area in those days and expresses an architectural character that integrates the vernacular with the colonial in a novel and striking manner. It took us over a year to restore the building and refurbish it with a studied attention to detail that its former owners would have been proud of. Tamil Nadu's social culture of the times informed its design aesthetic to a great extent. This noticeable ‘less-is-more’ philosophy gets reflected in Maison Perumal's minimalistic interiors that are adorned with a spare style, yet pay much attention to detail. Stained glass offsets the familiar local white plaster in a telling example of creating a distinct identity. It is how Maison Perumal celebrates its special heritage.

The ‘less-is-more’ philosophy gets reflected in Maison Perumal's minimalistic interiors that are adorned with a spare style, yet pay much attention to detail. The materials are typically local with cool Cuduppah stone on the floor and teak furniture that echo the richness of the period.

The walls are a rotated gallery space with a selection of canvases that showcase the paintings of local artists. It is part of our initiative to promote local art.

In the Embrace of Divinity

Veppathur, Kumbakonam  - Mantra Koodam

Mantra Koodam is a divine experience nestled in Veppathur, Kumbakonam – the town of 5,000 temples. The property is designed like an ‘agraharam’ – the characteristically Brahmin street lined with ‘illams’ (homes). It’s a tribute to the region’s heritage and its historic stature as a seat of power in South India. The living spaces offer a window into what was once a predominant way of life, where cultures, communities and traditions thrived in harmony. The chimes of the tolling bell that welcome you, are a precursor to the sublime experience that awaits. You step into a street modeled after a typical 'agraharam' – literally translating into ‘garland of houses’. These houses, or ‘illams’, line both sides of the streets. The cottages are designed like traditional Chettiar homes – with large verandahs, Athangudi tiles on the floor, ornate Burmese teak doors and open-to-air bathrooms. Strolling through the property, you will come across lush green coconut groves, temple shrines and the occasional peacock that has made a home here. The landscape takes your senses on a much deeper journey, elevating your holiday to a higher level of transcendence.
